Making Tax Digital for VAT
Every VAT-registered business must keep digital records and file VAT returns through MTD-compatible software such as Xero, QuickBooks or Sage. Returns are due one month and seven days after the end of each VAT period, and the payment is due at the same time.
Late returns now earn penalty points. Once you reach the threshold, four points for quarterly filers, HMRC charges a £200 penalty for that and every further late return. Late payment penalties and interest are separate. Having a specialist prepare the return early is the simplest way to stay clear of both.
Where VAT usually goes wrong
Most VAT errors aren’t complicated. They’re a supplier invoice coded at 20% that was actually zero-rated, VAT reclaimed on an invoice addressed to someone else, entertainment VAT claimed when it shouldn’t be, or construction invoices missing the reverse charge. They add up, and they’re exactly what a VAT inspection looks for.
Your specialist checks treatment as invoices are posted, not at the end of the quarter, and reconciles the control account every period, so the figure on the return matches the ledger.
VAT registration and schemes
The VAT registration threshold is £90,000 of taxable turnover in any rolling 12-month period. Your specialist can watch your turnover against it and flag when you’re getting close, and help you compare the flat rate and cash accounting schemes with your accountant.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an offshore team prepare UK VAT returns?
Yes. Your specialist prepares and reconciles the return in your MTD-compatible software. You or your accountant approve it, and it is submitted to HMRC through the software as normal.
When is a VAT return due?
One month and seven days after the end of the VAT period, with payment due at the same time for most businesses.
What is the penalty for a late VAT return?
Each late return earns a penalty point. When you reach the threshold (four points for quarterly returns), HMRC charges £200, and another £200 for each further late return. Late payment penalties and interest apply separately.
Do you handle reverse charge and import VAT?
Yes. Your specialist applies the domestic reverse charge on construction services and accounts for import VAT using your postponed VAT statements.
How much does offshore VAT support cost?
A dedicated, full-time specialist starts from £1,000 a month and usually handles your bookkeeping as well as VAT.
